1940’S RADIO HOUR

Set on December 21, 1942, 1940’s Radio Hour deals with the struggles of radio station WOV in New York City as they attempt to record a broadcast for the troops serving overseas.

Nighthawks by Edward Hopper (1942)

Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks served as visual inspiration for my design. When designing a nostalgic WW2 Christmas show, there was a temptation to draw more inspiration from artists such as Normal Rockwell. I was drawn to this painting because of the sense of loneliness. 1940’s Radio Hour is a bustling, comic, very sentimental show. However, there are moments of loneliness and self reflection when the characters seem to realize that things will never be the same; After this broadcast some characters will remain, either by choice or circumstance, while others will depart- perhaps forever.
